In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.
Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
