The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations starting at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Innovation Gap

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
